Intro

Kayla was diagnosed with fibrosarcoma (type of soft tissue tumor) in her left hind leg. We went in for a teeth cleaning and decided to do a biopsy of this 'bump' that has been on her leg for a while now. The 'bump' didn't hurt or bother her at all -- she was walking and jumping fine on it. We also did a needle aspiration but only found blood and fluid. Unfortunately, the biopsy came back as malignant cancer and after further tests the pathologists confirmed that it's a soft tissue sarcoma. We went ahead with a slew of tests to get as much information as possible to make a decision on treatment options. The good news is that we did not see any abnormalities anywhere else in her body, which means the cancer has not spread.

Because of the location and size of the cancerous growth, it would be nearly impossible to surgically remove it and keep her leg functional. After weeks of tests, research, and consultation, Jared and I have made the difficult decision of amputating her leg to cure her of the cancer. We are very confident that this is the best option for her and would enable her to continue live a long and good life.

We found it really helpful and inspiring to read about other people's experience and recovery stories, so I've decided to start a blog for Kayla.

We want to thank everyone who has been so supportive during this process. It really means a lot to us. Please continue to send us positive energy and thoughts!
